I put this project together for Black History Month this year. The objective was to not only focus on the subject of head wraps, but to also capture the essence, spirit and beauty of the black woman. Headwraps are a staple in today’s urban fashion scene, but we never discuss the true meaning and origin of them. While putting this concept together, I did some research on the history of head wraps, what they represented and the true purpose they serve today.
What I found only solidified my preconceived beliefs, and ultimately lead me to deciding on a title for this project. Historically what I found is that headwraps were imposed on black women as a badge of enslavement by white masters. By doing this head wraps were used to distinguish between black people without power from those who held it. Spiritually, they are perceived as a sign of respect, humility and sometimes modesty.
It was a pleasure putting this project together with these amazing women, and having their trust in my execution aided in its success. This will not be the last time you see me talk about head wraps, because I have a business plan in the works to create my own line of head wraps. I will put just as much care into it as I did with this project, and I can’t wait to share it with you in the near future.
